    From other videos I've heard this 3rd option called a Stivot turn. When watching World Cup slalom & GS races, I noticed that often times they would actually hop into a brief skid at the apex of the turn. It surprised me that they weren't making pure carved turns. One video explained that some of the gates were being set closer than turning radius of the ski thus the racers had to skid a bit which is apparently the fastest route for them. I have inadvertently used this method in my drastically lower level of skiing as a way of controlling my speed on what are to me, steep areas. Others I've seen do not seem to consider them steep enough to warrant trying to control their speed. Being in my mid 70's, I no longer abide by that old "saw" that "if you're not falling, you're not skiing".

    Regardless of whether one agrees with all 14 points, one can never think of all of them during a run. There simply isn't enough time for that, by far not enough. We can think of only one, maybe two matters at once during a run, so focus on one. Once that matter has become an automatism, should we progress to the next. Now, the million dollar question is this: with which matter should we start? What is the first matter, the second, the third, etc.?

    Very good explanations. I might add that a certain modest amount of speed helps create the momentum to smash through piles of snow. Also, it can never be effortless because the changing density and texture of the snow grabs at your skis and boots, alternately slowing and accelerating them. Crud is not my favorite but a good way to get away from crowds.

    Flexing through transition. The small slow motion phase which you choose to show is making me think that you are back seated in the transition phase, was that on purpose? Is that what GS racers do or was is just a small slip? Tha k you for the great video and I wish you lots of fun out there on the slopes! Mike.

    Good video! One question: 007 = reverse Superman? Or are there more differences?

    • @Triggerboy62
      @Triggerboy62 Місяць тому

      Thanks. Not sure what you are referring to thou. I have never really liked the Super Man drill, especially for kids and they are so flexible and agile that they overdo it and create all sorts of bad tendencies like: a-frame, excessive counter, limited inclination, park and ride, low edge angles, contradictive movement to blocking SL gates etc etc. That is where the 007 drill comes in. I have not invented it myself but given it the names I am using: 007 or Reversed Super Man Drill. As it is just that. Instead of reaching "outwards" with your inside arm, reach "forwards" across the hill with your outside arm. I first got acquainted with it by a video with Tina Mazes coach. The Super Man drill is a SL drill, the Reversed Super Man drill is a GS drill. You want your momentum to be projected forwards instead of down the hill as in SL. This also explains why you extend more often through the transition in GS like Odermatt. Flexing is absorbing some of that rebound and momentum. Extending is like driving a F1 car with no shock absorbers. Hopefully this answers at least some of your questions. Cheers, T

    Not sure at all what you are trying to demonstrate here. Counter? The reality is the real secret of the hips is tilting the pelvic bone. Watch "Mikaela Shiffrin GS Hip Hike", posted by Brandon D, former USST Tech Coach. The modern carving technique it is to keep the hips fairly square, and level (tilt/hike) strongly. All elite skiers are at MAXIMUM tilt at the loaded point of the turn. The max their pelvic bone will tilt...they are doing it.

    • @Triggerboy62
      @Triggerboy62 Місяць тому

      The hip hike is just another word for angulation or counter balance. If we dont stick to the english language there are many more. Sorry if the demo became unclear to you. In the bad turns I was trying not to angulate while in the correct turns I did. However, there is always a bit of counter at the hips in angulation. And skiing square will therefore be prone to hip rotation. I know that in ski instruction and race coaching over the past 30 years a huge effort has been made to rid counter from all teaching but I do not subscribe to that. Check out my video on 3 way separation or any video on angulation. Hips need to go into the turn. This is an entry level demo. Cheers, T

    • @shooter7a
      @shooter7a Місяць тому

      @@Triggerboy62 Hip hike / pelvic bone tilt is about way more than just that. It has a dramatic effect on the weigh distribution at the bottom of your FEET. It has a profound impact on ones ability to tip the skis at the very start of the turn. It also has a lot to do with modulation/adjustment of edge angle at the highest load part of the turn. . I have taken a number of skiers who were having a hard time carving, and within 10 minutes got them to feel how easy it is to carve when you tilt properly. It is absolutely critical, and far too often overlooked. Each of them had been taught over and over to tip the skis, with ZERO explanation that the hips must tilt in a complimentary manner. I believe this is the #1 failing in intermediate to advanced instruction. . As for counter, I believe that counter is just down to personal style and your own anatomy these days. It is far far less important than tilt. It is not a critical factor, and it give way way more focus that it should be. Avoid deliberately adding counter. It only weakens your position. . Many, if not most tops skiers, at least in GS or longer radius turns, ski with virtually NO COUNTER at all. The hips track the direction of travel. In SL, YES, their is counter just because there is literally not enough time for the upper body to catch up with the lower.

    • @Triggerboy62
      @Triggerboy62 Місяць тому

      @@shooter7a yes, exactly. Tilting the hips in the correct manner, also called angulation, is imperative for successful carving. Obviously you need to do things in the correct manner, I think we can agree on that. Also for normal parallel skiing and for wedging. And yes, counter is much a matter of personal style but you are wrong in that part as IMO it actually makes your position stronger, not weaker. There is this old drill we do where we pull on a skiers ski poles down in the fall line and the skier tries to resist the pull. I have featured this drill a few times here on UA-cam. It forces the skier to angulate and also to counter in order to not be pulled downhill out of position. And yes, GS is different to SL when it comes to counter. In GS you want the energy to go forward in the direction of the skis across the hill more than in SL where you stay closer to the fall line and the turns are quicker. However, nowadays there is huge offset in racing tracks so its not that black and white. I learned the 007 drill from Mazes coach years ago but its still my go to drill to have my athletes project their momentum forward for an explosive release and transition. All in all, the demo was to demonstrate that you should bring your hips into the turn and not let them rotate to the outside causing you to stand on your inside ski and your skis to flatten out and skid. For more comprehensive instruction I have other videos. Cheers, Tom

    • @shooter7a
      @shooter7a Місяць тому

      @@Triggerboy62 I know that old counter drill well. Coaches had us do it in the 80s. It is 100% misleading and leads to bad conclusions. Be open minded and think about this.... When you are actually skiing, all the turning loads (G forces) do not go through your arms from a coach pulling on your ski poles. That is a completely artificial construct used to reinforce old coaching dogma.. The forces are distributed evenly in proportion to your mass as a function of the G forces. That means most of the load is originating AT your midsection through inertial effects.. Put a harness around someone's midsection to accurately model this, and pull on it, and you will come to a very different conclusion about what a "strong" position is. Counter does nothing for how the loads really act on your body in a turn on modern skis. Look at these still photos in this vid with Deb and John Leffler... ua-cam.com/video/KvlcM9l0c8g/v-deo.html This is max load point in the turn...fully stacked.... Where is the counter? There is NONE. In fact, they are both slightly over rotated at the point when they need to be the strongest. Today, on carving skis, the ability to handle load comes from stacking and being able to balance on a turning ski with your outside leg almost straight....not counter. Long and stacked is strong. Counter is not.

    Superman and variations-should we create a hip dump and counterrotation of the hips at the turn initiation? Do you consider that a proper race technique? Or even an adequate skiing technique? Sorry, but I strongly disagree. Chris is noticeably misaligned with his hips when doing this drill. There are many other questionable statements and drills, but this just surprised me. Maybe I don't understand, I apologise for my negative feedback. It just doesn't look right to me.

    • @Triggerboy62
      @Triggerboy62 Місяць тому

      Feedback much appreciated. We have had many comments in the commentary section of videos, even from wc-racers, and it is important to let everyone have a say. Many times the regular guy out on the mountain can come up with the most valuable information. Regarding the superman drill.... Im not very fond of this drill but I am fond of the reversed superman drill. Also the variation where you pass a ski pole from outside hand to new outside hand at transition. Drills are usually not aimed at having you ski a certain way, its more a way of trying to enhance good movements or in most cases rid bad habits. If a skier fails to angulate at the hip and counter, bring the hips into the turn, then the superman drill helps with that. But we do not want a hip dump, therefore we need to build other movements into the skiers movement pattern. The reverse superman drill I learned from Tina Mazes coach. Basically the superman drill is a SL type drill while the reversed super man drill is a GS drill. Note that this video is several years old. Check out newer videos on his skiing and please give some feedback as to his skiing at the moment. Here: ua-cam.com/users/shortsBm-BzjSWxDI Cheers, Tom

      We tuned two identical 2024 pairs to 86 and left a brand new 2023 pair at 87. When testing these against each other on the same track we were blown away with the 86 performance. They reacted so much faster and and made the skis so much more quick into the turn and overall responsive and lively with superior edge hold. We have a video of it and the 87 pair simply did not bend into the turn at the same rate, leaving Chris standing on his inside ski and skidding a lot more. Since the skis are not 100% identical it is impossible to give an absolute verdict but we had tested the skis against each other earlier at 87 deg and there was no difference then. You are right, drifting the skis into the turn is more difficult. However, that is Chris especially good at, drifting the skis at the top of the turn. So much in fact that he has been slammed badly for it by other coaches. We do not mind as our approach is a bit more skidding at the top of the turn at this stage and then minimizing it over time instead of crashing out in every race as many others do that try to carve edge locked every turn just to be as fast as possible. I will make a follow up video even if the last races were not on water injected snow as we had taught. And planned for. Tom

      Thank you for watching and thank you for sharing. I actually did a video years ago where I compared a wider all mountain ski with rocker to my usual FIS SL skis. Here: ua-cam.com/video/FAaLbTScW5I/v-deo.html My experience was that I had absolutely no gain from the wider ski in these kind of conditions. So if I ski on groomers 90% of the time and I get away in conditions like this with my regular slalom skis then I dont need wider skis. On the other hand if I never ski on a groomer but in off piste conditions and in powder then a wider ski makes sense. But a new video with similar testing would be very interesting for the majority of skiers here on my channel as most still think they need the wider skis as skiing on groomers is done as well with wider skis. NOT. We have tested up and to because ski reps keep telling us how good the wider skis are but the truth needs to get out there. On the other hand, if I come to an other conclusion I will of course change my mind. Cheers, T

    What is the length / strength of the bands used in this video? Thanks.

      Cant remember. But it should be a softer one. That particular one was not very good. Better with the wider bands.

      I see the same length in shops all the time. These are probably the shortest ones. Tom

    Great video, Tom. I've been trying to find a carving video you made a while back, depicting sitting in the 'toilet seat' and using this position to really improve your carving... can you direct me? THANKS

      The best! Check out my video in the link or just search for wedging videos on my channel. Or go to playlists and look at beginner lessons. Really advanced lessons ;)

      Tom, I love what you're doing here. Guiding the "airplane" motion effectively to create the weight shift needed to change directions. I'll be incorporating this in my lessons. Thank you. Cheers, Marshall

    切り換えで、次の外スキーのトップに圧を加えるポジショニング取ってないと、ターンの開始遅れませんか?ターン後半から切り替えにかけて、重心(骨盤)を前に運ぶ運動が必要です。そのためには、太腿を立ててて切り替えに向かう必要があります。腰は高くなります。

      Thank you for watching. Here are lots of different styles and techniques. Watching the fastest skiers, the first ones, is an indication on what is fast. Tom
